University Researchers Investigate Injury Risks of ‘Tush Push’ Play

As discussions surrounding the controversial ‘Tush Push’ play intensify, a team of biomedical engineers at the University of Rochester is conducting research to evaluate potential injury risks associated with this popular football maneuver. This examination, spearheaded by undergraduate research assistant Tina Kyriacou, aims to provide biomechanical insights into the play, often referred to as the ‘Brotherly Shove.’
The researchers have begun their investigations in the lab, employing advanced technologies such as high-speed cameras and pressure-sensing insoles. These tools allow the team to analyze the mechanics of the ‘Tush Push’ and explore safer execution methods. “I believe the ‘Tush Push’ has generated considerable controversy, particularly regarding quarterback sneaks,” Kyriacou stated, emphasizing the importance of their work.
High-tech analysis is at the core of this research. Aly March, a postdoctoral associate at the university, explained that they utilize sophisticated software to create models of players’ skeletal structures. “We filmed ourselves in ‘Tush Push’ formation to capture multiple individuals and overlay their skeletons,” March detailed. This innovative approach provides critical data for understanding the biomechanics of the play.
The involvement of the university’s football team has enhanced the project’s scope. Researchers positioned high-speed cameras on the field to monitor players during practice. The quarterback wore pressure-sensing insoles in his cleats, allowing the team to collect data on the forces exerted during various plays. This information was subsequently analyzed in their lab, where researchers measured the power and work generated at each joint during the execution of the play.
The ultimate objective of this research is to assess the safety of the ‘Tush Push.’ March acknowledged the pressing need for such evaluations, stating, “Safety is definitely a concern. If we determine that any aspect of the play poses risks, we aim to find ways to modify it.”
The NFL’s attempts to ban the ‘Tush Push’ have also played a role in the ongoing debate. Following a proposal from the Green Bay Packers during the offseason, the league’s decision-makers fell just two votes short of eliminating the play altogether. This highlights the contentious nature of the maneuver and the growing calls for further examination.
