Brewers Place Quintana on IL, Megill’s Return in Doubt Ahead of Playoffs

BREAKING: The Milwaukee Brewers face a critical setback as pitcher Jose Quintana has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left calf strain, just days before the playoffs begin. This urgent development was confirmed Wednesday after Quintana sustained the injury during Sunday’s tight 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Quintana’s injury occurred while he was hustling to cover first base, leading to immediate concern among fans and teammates alike. He limped off the field and later left American Family Field in a walking boot while on his way for an MRI. With Quintana’s status now uncertain, the Brewers are scrambling to adjust their pitching rotation as the postseason looms.
In the wake of this setback, the Brewers activated right-handed reliever Nick Mears from the injured list to fill Quintana’s spot. This comes as Trevor Megill, the All-Star closer, remains sidelined with a right flexor strain, initially perceived as a minor issue. Megill has not pitched since August 27 and his return has become increasingly doubtful.
Manager Pat Murphy expressed concern regarding Megill’s recovery, stating, “Nothing great. It was not revealing but he didn’t want to push it anymore.” Megill, who has an impressive 2.54 ERA along with 30 saves, was expected to throw before Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, but results have not met expectations.
“We all want him to pitch before the postseason,” Murphy added, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “His health is paramount. It’s not checking out medically,” he stated, highlighting the delicate nature of Megill’s injury.
With just over a week until the postseason, the Brewers are facing immense pressure as they navigate these injuries. Murphy cautioned against rushing Megill back into action, saying, “It’s not recommended. It’s got to have some time to heal. Unfortunately, we don’t have that time.”
On a brighter note for the Brewers, Robert Gasser, who has been recovering from Tommy John surgery since June, pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings for Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday. Murphy indicated that Gasser could be returning to the major league roster soon, potentially in a multi-inning relief role.
Additionally, right-hander Chad Patrick, recently called up, struck out the side in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s game against the Angels. Murphy praised Patrick’s performance, stating, “Chad Patrick threw the ball good last night, that’s encouraging.” As the Brewers navigate the final days before the playoffs, every decision will be critical to their postseason aspirations.
Fans and analysts alike are watching closely as the Brewers prepare for what could be a challenging playoff run. The next few days will be crucial in determining the health and readiness of their key pitchers.
