NC State Celebrates 20 Years of Impact at European Center
The NC State University European Center in Prague is commemorating its 20th anniversary with a series of events aimed at highlighting its significant impact on the university community. Since its establishment in 2005, more than 3,500 students have participated in study abroad programs, enriching their academic experiences and fostering global connections. Festivities will take place throughout the fall semester on the main campus in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The celebration features a diverse lineup of events designed to engage students, faculty, alumni, and other stakeholders. Activities include a 360-degree exhibition at the D.H. Hill Jr. Library, showcasing the transformative journeys of students who have studied in Prague. Additionally, a screening of the Oscar-shortlisted Czech film “Waves” will be part of the Global Film Series, accompanied by a lecture on its historical context led by Paul Isom, a faculty member affiliated with the European Center.
Key Events and Activities
The series of events commences with an immersive showcase set for September 23-25. Attendees can explore a range of study abroad experiences through a collection of photos and narratives from former students. Admission to the exhibition, located in the Cyma Rubin Gallery at the Hill Library, is free and open to the public.
On October 23, the Global Film Series will present “Waves” at the Hunt Library Auditorium. This event is poised to draw attention not only for its cinematic quality but also for its exploration of historical themes relevant to the Czech Republic. Admission is free, with an opportunity to reserve tickets in advance.
The celebration continues with “A Taste of Prague” on October 28, featuring a traditional Czech meal at the Clark Dining Hall. This event coincides with Czech Independence Day and aims to immerse participants in Czech culture.
Another highlight will be the “Lightning Talks and Faculty Roundtable” on November 18 at the Witherspoon Student Center. Faculty members will discuss various opportunities available in Prague, providing insights into the educational and cultural experiences awaiting students. Registration is required for this event, although admission remains free.
The culmination of the celebration will occur during International Education Week on November 20, with a panel of alumni sharing their personal study abroad stories at the Talley Student Union. This event will include networking opportunities and virtual tours of the European Center’s surroundings, enhancing the connection between past and present students. Admission is free and does not require prior registration.
Throughout these events, virtual-reality headsets will be available at designated times, allowing attendees to experience a virtual tour of the center and its historic Prague district.
