Amazon Lowers Health Care Costs for Employees to Just $5 Weekly

Amazon has announced significant reductions in health care costs for its employees, introducing a basic health care plan priced at just $5 per week. This change marks a decrease from over $7, making health care more accessible for both employees and their families. The revamped plan, which begins on Day 1 of employment, also lowers copay fees for doctor visits from $40 to $5.
This new structure allows employees to save approximately 28% on weekly health insurance premiums while making doctor visits 88% cheaper. Full-time employees will be eligible for medical coverage immediately upon starting their roles, eliminating waiting periods that are common in other companies. Amazon’s commitment to enhancing employee health and well-being is evident as the company invests over $1 billion to raise wages and reduce health care costs for its U.S. fulfillment and transportation workers.
Immediate Access to Comprehensive Health Care
The improved Amazon basic health care plan covers a wide range of services essential for employee well-being. Employees can access preventive care, including health screenings and immunizations, at no cost. For a nominal $5 primary care deductible, employees and their families can receive care for injuries and illnesses. This plan extends to specialist visits, mental health counseling, physical and occupational therapy, emergency room care, and essential medical needs like hearing aids.
Employees are encouraged to explore the various health care plan options available to them upon starting their employment, ensuring they find the best fit for their specific family needs. Benefits may vary based on factors such as work location, scheduled hours, and length of employment. Part-time and seasonal employees may also qualify for medical insurance after 90 days of service, depending on their hours worked.
Comprehensive Support Beyond Health Care
Amazon’s dedication to employee health extends beyond traditional medical coverage. The company offers up to 20 weeks of paid leave for birth parents and six weeks for eligible supporting parents, alongside extensive mental health resources. Employees can access the Employee Assistance Program, which provides 24/7 work-life support and free short-term counseling.
Additionally, Amazon has introduced innovative family-building and fertility benefits, with over 24,000 employees utilizing these resources since their launch. Specialized support teams, such as the CARES team for cancer patients, assist employees in navigating their health care options and maximizing their benefits.
Amazon also provides access to the Expert Medical Opinion service, which offers support for complex diagnoses, and Pelago, an online confidential clinic for substance use treatment. Notably, all employees, even those not enrolled in an Amazon health plan, can utilize the free 24/7 Medical Advice Line from their first day of employment.
These changes reflect Amazon’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the overall compensation package for its employees, making health care more affordable and accessible while ensuring that all employees have the support they need to thrive in their roles. As Amazon continues to innovate in employee benefits, the company reaffirms its dedication to fostering a healthy and supportive work environment.
