Schools in Lincolnshire will continue to offer free holiday activities for children eligible for free school meals, thanks to newly secured funding from the government. This initiative is part of the Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF), designed to provide nutritious meals and engaging activities for children during school holidays.

The additional funding will support schools in providing holiday clubs over the Christmas, Easter, and summer breaks for children from reception to year 11. The HAF program aims to ensure that children from low-income families receive both healthy meals and opportunities to stay active during the extended breaks from school.

At a council meeting on September 12, 2023, Councillor Natalie Oliver of Reform UK expressed her satisfaction with the government’s decision to extend the funding for the program over the next three years.

“I’m pleased to say that our plea has been heard,” she stated. “I’m delighted that the government has confirmed that the funding for the Holiday Activities and Food Programme will continue for the next three years. This means that children will continue to receive activities during the school holidays. This funding will ensure that more children can take part in these activities.”

Councillor Karen Lee, leader of the Labour group at the county council, also welcomed the decision, highlighting the support from the government. “I’m very pleased to hear that. I’m really pleased to see that a Labour government is supporting this,” she commented.

Councillor Stephen Bunney from the Liberal Democrats, who chaired the meeting, emphasized the importance of the scheme for local families. “I’m pleased to see this continue. It’s a very important sum of money which is used to support families in Lincolnshire,” he noted.

The HAF program is a vital resource for many families in Lincolnshire, helping to alleviate some of the pressures associated with the cost of living. By providing free access to holiday clubs, the initiative not only addresses nutritional needs but also promotes physical activity and social interaction among children.

As schools gear up for the upcoming holiday seasons, this funding ensures that children will not only have access to healthy meals but also a safe and engaging environment to participate in various activities. The continuation of the HAF program is a significant step in supporting the well-being of children and families in the region.
