Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) publicly criticized Attorney General Pam Bondi on Tuesday after Bondi suggested that the Department of Justice would pursue prosecutions for “hate speech” following the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. During an interview on her podcast, Bondi expressed concerns regarding public criticism directed toward Kirk after his assassination, asserting that the government would take action against those who engage in hate speech.

“There’s free speech and then there’s hate speech, and there is no place, especially now, especially after what happened to Charlie, in our society,” Bondi stated. “We will absolutely target you, go after you, if you are targeting anyone with hate speech.” Her comments sparked a swift response from Crockett, who appeared on CNN’s “The Arena” with Kasie Hunt.

Crockett argued that the focus of the Department of Justice and the FBI should be on identifying genuine threats rather than policing speech that may offend some individuals. “If there’s anything this DOJ and this FBI director need to be doing, they need to be surveilling online to figure out who the potential real threats are,” she emphasized.

She pointed out that Kirk’s assailant had been active online prior to the shooting but had managed to evade detection by law enforcement. This concern parallels the events surrounding another shooting in Evergreen, Colorado, where Crockett noted that the FBI failed to identify potential threats.

“That tells you how adequate they are at their jobs right now,” Crockett remarked. She clarified that her criticism was not directed at the individual agents but rather at the leadership of the FBI, which she accused of diverting resources away from critical investigations to focus on less pressing matters. “Maybe we should focus on policing the speech that is more than just speech, but it is leading to actual deaths, instead of just looking at whatever hurts the feelings of conservatives,” she concluded.

Crockett’s remarks underscore a growing debate surrounding free speech and the responsibilities of law enforcement agencies in the wake of violent incidents. The discussion highlights the complexities of balancing constitutional rights with public safety concerns, particularly in a politically charged environment. As the investigation into Kirk’s murder continues, both Crockett and Bondi’s positions reflect the polarized views on how to address hate speech and its potential consequences in society.
