Mark Ronson has opened up about his unsettling experiences with Sean “Diddy” Combs long before allegations of abuse against the music mogul became public. In his new memoir, *Night People: How to Be a DJ in ’90s New York City*, Ronson describes the chaotic energy that Diddy emitted, which left him both starstruck and deeply uneasy.

Ronson, now 50, recalls that during the mid-1990s, he recognized Diddy’s significant influence on the Manhattan club scene. “For all the gigs I played for Puff, he probably spoke five sentences to me,” Ronson writes. “It became abundantly clear he wielded a tremendous amount of power and cachet.” Diddy, 55, was not merely a rapper but a formidable figure who could shape careers and dictate the terms of success in the industry.

Power Dynamics in the New York Club Scene

Ronson notes that Diddy’s presence transformed New York nightlife. “He took over downtown — and then the Hamptons,” he writes, adding that “the whole city seemed to revolve around him and his parties.” When Ronson played at Diddy’s events, he often found himself in the company of high-profile guests such as Muhammad Ali, Martha Stewart, and Denzel Washington. “When I got booked to play his parties, I’d look to the VIP area and see people like the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, all mingling. Everyone went.”

At that time, the public’s focus on Diddy centered primarily on his music. In stark contrast, Ronson reflects on the “horrific allegations” that emerged nearly three decades later regarding Diddy’s conduct behind the scenes.

In November 2023, Diddy faced serious allegations from his ex-girlfriend Cassie, who filed a lawsuit alleging rape, physical abuse, and sex trafficking. Diddy denied these claims but settled with Cassie for $20 million less than 24 hours later. This legal battle set the stage for further scrutiny of Diddy’s past, culminating in his arrest in September 2024 on charges including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking.

Legal Troubles and Ongoing Allegations

Diddy pleaded not guilty to the charges, and his trial commenced in May 2025, featuring testimonies from Cassie, rapper Kid Cudi, and over 30 other witnesses. In July, the jury found him guilty of two prostitution-related counts but acquitted him of three more serious charges. Diddy has been in custody since his arrest and is set to be sentenced on October 3, 2024, facing a maximum of 20 years in prison.

In addition to the criminal charges, Diddy is confronted with numerous civil lawsuits alleging decades of sexual abuse. Throughout this tumultuous period, he has consistently maintained his innocence.

As the music industry grapples with the implications of these allegations, Ronson’s reflections provide a critical lens on the power dynamics and the darker undercurrents of celebrity culture in New York City.
