URGENT UPDATE: A spectacular chance to witness the Northern Lights is on the horizon for several states this weekend, driven by predicted geomagnetic storms, as confirmed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). On Saturday night, a Kp index of 3 on a scale of 9 indicates potential visibility stretching as far south as southern Minnesota.

As excitement builds, NOAA forecasts a rise to a Kp index of 4 on Sunday, with the possibility of adjustments to this prediction as the agency anticipates minor geomagnetic storms late Sunday into early Monday. The best viewing opportunities will occur from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. local time.

Northern Canada and Alaska will experience the most vibrant displays, but conditions could also allow sightings in parts of Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Upper Michigan on Saturday. On Sunday, the forecast expands to include regions in Washington, South Dakota, and Maine.

NOAA advises those hoping to catch a glimpse to seek out a north-facing location away from light pollution for optimal viewing. Photography enthusiasts can enhance their chances by using a wide-angle lens, an aperture of F-stop 4 or lower, and focusing to the furthest setting. Smartphone users should enable night mode, turn off flash, and use a tripod for stability.

This weekend’s heightened activity is part of an ongoing period of increased solar activity, which peaked in late 2024 and is expected to last into early 2026. These solar phenomena, including flares and coronal mass ejections, generate the dazzling displays of the aurora borealis by exciting atmospheric molecules.

Stay tuned for real-time updates as this exciting natural event approaches! Don’t miss out on the chance to share this stunning phenomenon with friends and family.
