URGENT UPDATE: The Vallejo Police Department has just released critical details regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred on August 29, 2025, during a town hall meeting last night at Jesse Bethel High School. The meeting included shocking video and audio evidence related to the shooting of Alexander Schumann, 24, at the Blue Rock Village Apartments.

In a packed presentation, Vallejo Police Chief Jason Ta and his command staff unveiled recordings of 911 calls, as well as dashcam and bodycam footage. The incident unfolded rapidly, with video showing Schumann exiting a vehicle while holding what initially appeared to be a firearm. Upon raising his hands, he fell to the ground. It was later confirmed that the item in his possession was a BB gun.

Schumann was airlifted to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. He has since been released but remains in custody in Fairfield, where he faces multiple felony and misdemeanor warrants. His father, James Schumann, expressed concerns about the incident, stating his son is still recovering from a bullet wound in his hip.

In stark contrast to previous town hall meetings that drew large crowds in Vallejo, last night’s gathering attracted only 25 to 30 attendees, with limited questions from the public. Vallejo Mayor Andrea Sorce and other city officials were present but did not address the audience.

“We take all incidents of use of force very seriously,” Chief Ta stated. He emphasized that the department mobilized swiftly following the shooting, including the involvement of internal affairs and public information officers.

The Vallejo Police Department has committed to improving communication and protocols during such incidents. Chief Ta announced that family members of individuals involved in officer-involved shootings will now be contacted promptly, a response to past criticisms regarding the department’s handling of these sensitive cases.

The Solano County Major Crimes Task Force is currently conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting. An independent investigator has also been retained for an administrative review. Meanwhile, a Critical Incident Review Board will evaluate the department’s tactics and response protocols.

The timeline of events reveals a chaotic scene. Authorities received a call at approximately 5:15 PM reporting a man in a ski mask on the hood of a moving vehicle. A follow-up call at 6:02 PM indicated a man, later identified as Schumann, breaking windows of a vehicle in the same area. Witnesses reported that Schumann had expressed a desire for police to shoot him.

As officers arrived, they attempted to gather information but were unaware that Schumann may have been armed. Just minutes later, at around 6:25 PM, officers confronted Schumann, who allegedly pointed what appeared to be a handgun at them. This prompted two officers to discharge their weapons, firing a total of seven rounds and striking Schumann in both the upper and lower body.

During the Q&A session, James Schumann raised poignant questions about the police’s actions. “I keep hearing, ‘Shots fired,’ but the gun my son was holding didn’t even have a trigger,” he stated. Vallejo Police Sgt. Rashad Hollis clarified that the shots were from the officers responding to the threat.

The community remains on edge as new details emerge. With ongoing investigations by both the Solano County Major Crimes Task Force and the Vallejo PD Critical Incident Review Board, further developments are expected. Residents are urged to stay tuned for updates as officials continue to address the implications of this incident.

This unfolding situation highlights the urgent need for accountability and transparency in police actions, as the Vallejo community grapples with the aftermath of this officer-involved shooting.
