Volunteers Transform Vallejo Veteran’s Home on 9/11 Anniversary

UPDATE: Over 50 volunteers are actively renovating the home of Vallejo veteran Hunter Blaine today, September 11, 2023, in a heartfelt tribute to honor his service and the memory of 9/11. This significant initiative, organized by Rebuilding Together Solano County, marks the 45th workday since 2009, showcasing community support for local veterans.
The Blaine family, including Hunter and his wife Annette, are witnessing a transformation of their residence, which has been their home for 26 years. The extensive repairs include new paint, landscaping, updated safety features, and essential home upgrades to ensure a safer living environment. Hunter Blaine, reflecting on the outpouring of support, stated, “It’s been amazing to see everyone doing what they are doing and doing it very well.”
This year’s workday is particularly poignant, as it coincides with the anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Hunter Blaine recalls the day vividly, stating, “I remember thinking, ‘How can someone do something so horrible and despicable?’ It made no sense to me.” The work being done at his home today adds a layer of significance to an already emotional day.
As part of the renovation, volunteers are painting the house in a new color, Nut Shell, updating the garage with LED lights and motion detectors, and installing new smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. The project is expected to conclude by the end of October, providing the Blaine family with much-needed safety and comfort.
Elizabeth Hoffman, Executive Director of Rebuilding Together Solano County, emphasized the importance of these efforts. “It is heartwarming that Rebuilding Together and our sponsors, including Wells Fargo and Home Depot, can join together to make a lasting difference for a veteran family in Solano County,” she remarked. With this initiative, they aim to support low-income homeowners, including veterans, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, allowing them to remain in their homes with dignity.
Additionally, around 15 Wells Fargo employees are volunteering today, with approximately 40 volunteers from Travis Air Force Base scheduled to assist over the weekend. This collaborative effort underscores the community’s commitment to uplift those who have served in the military.
Rebuilding Together Solano County has been a beacon of support since June 2009, mobilizing over 12,000 volunteers to provide vital home repairs for veterans and low-income homeowners across the county. This initiative, now the 30th in Vallejo, continues to address the needs of local veterans, where the demand is particularly high.
As the renovation progresses, the Blaine family is overwhelmed with gratitude. Annette humorously noted, “Elizabeth is running around like a chicken with her head cut off… it’s amazing.” The sense of community and collaboration shines brightly as volunteers work tirelessly to enhance the living conditions of those who have served their country.
With ongoing efforts and additional homes scheduled for repairs later this week, Rebuilding Together Solano County continues to exemplify the power of community support and compassion, ensuring that veterans like Hunter Blaine receive the care and respect they deserve.
