Russian drones were shot down approximately 150 miles into Polish airspace in a significant breach that has drawn sharp condemnation from NATO officials. The incident occurred overnight, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reporting that at least 19 objects entered the country’s airspace on the night of March 12, 2024. This development is marked as the furthest penetration into Poland during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, raising alarms across the NATO alliance.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte described the breach as a “reckless” act, emphasizing that the deployment of drones over Polish territory represents a clear escalation from Moscow. “Whether it was intentionally or not, it is absolutely reckless and dangerous,” Rutte stated during a press conference on March 13, 2024. He underscored the alliance’s commitment to defend its member nations, warning that any further encroachment would be met with a firm response.
Tusk characterized the event as “the closest we have been to open conflict since World War Two,” highlighting the gravity of the situation. Local officials discovered drone debris in various locations, including Mniszkow, a city about 82 miles southwest of Warsaw, and Olesno, near Elbląg, which is approximately 124 miles from Poland’s eastern border. These findings mark a significant escalation of hostilities in a region already fraught with tension.
Claims and Counterclaims in the Wake of the Incident
The drones involved in these incidents were identified as Russian Gerbera drones, a type known for reconnaissance and decoy purposes, as reported by a Polish army official to Reuters. Military experts suggest the drones may have been deployed to gauge the readiness of Polish and NATO defenses. Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, warned that “Russia’s war is escalating, not ending,” and labeled the breach a potential turning point in the conflict.
In contrast, Russian state media has suggested that Ukraine is to blame for the incident. They allege that the drones malfunctioned due to electronic warfare measures, asserting that Kyiv’s defense systems were responsible for the deviation.
