New Zealand Fugitive Father Dies in Police Shootout; Children Safe
UPDATE: A dramatic police confrontation in New Zealand has led to the death of fugitive father Tom Phillips, who had been on the run with his three children for nearly four years. The incident unfolded early Monday morning in the Waikato region’s rolling hills, where police responded to reports of a potential robbery.
Authorities confirmed that Phillips was shot and killed during the standoff, which also resulted in one police officer being critically injured. This urgent situation began around 2:00 AM when police received a tip about two individuals on a quad bike, reportedly linked to Phillips.
Authorities quickly identified Phillips as a suspect based on previous sightings, including a recent CCTV capture showing him and one of his children breaking into a store. Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers stated, “Knowing the information that we had previously that had seen Tom Phillips also in this area, additional staff were called out.”
As police attempted to stop the quad bike using spikes, gunfire erupted, leading to the tragic outcome. “A second patrol unit arrived and has engaged the offender, and he has died at the scene,” Rogers reported. The injured officer, shot in the head with a high-powered rifle, is currently undergoing surgery.
Importantly, one child was found uninjured and is now in police care. “We are making urgent inquiries to locate Tom Phillips’ other children, for whom we hold serious concerns,” Rogers added, highlighting the immediate focus on the well-being of the children.
The mother of the three children, known as Cat, expressed her relief that the ordeal had come to an end. “They have been dearly missed every day for nearly four years,” she stated to national broadcaster RNZ. “We are looking forward to welcoming them home with love and care.” However, she also expressed sorrow over the violent conclusion of the situation, emphasizing her hope for a peaceful resolution.
Since absconding in December 2021, Phillips was suspected of various crimes, including aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm. Police believe he had assistance in eluding capture for so long, with the children not attending school since their father went into hiding.
This incident has captivated the nation, particularly in the Waikato area and the town of Marokopa, where Phillips was suspected to have been hiding.
