The University of Cincinnati’s College of Arts & Sciences has unveiled a new initiative known as the A&S Action Collaborative, which merges the efforts of its 12 research centers to enhance their collective impact. This collaborative aims to leverage interdisciplinary research across areas such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, environmental sciences, cyber strategy, and urban policy.

According to a statement from UC News, the initiative is designed to foster greater synergy among the centers, moving away from isolated operations. Rina Williams, the associate dean of the social sciences division and the founder of the collaborative, emphasized the importance of supporting community-engaged research that can effect real change.

The center directors at UC responded positively to Williams’ proposal, initiating discussions about potential collaborative projects. These centers have a history of innovative work, exemplified by the Cedar Language Resource Center, which has integrated virtual reality into language instruction. Additionally, the Center for Public Engagement with Science has played a crucial role in making science accessible through events like the Science Harvest at Cincinnati’s Northside Farmers Market, where children participate in hands-on science experiments.

One of the most noteworthy developments is the recent award of a grant nearing $500,000 for the establishment of the Center for Explainable, Ethical, and Trustworthy AI. This center is seen as a pioneering effort in humanities-oriented research that explores the societal implications of artificial intelligence. In an interview with UC News, Will Umphres, associate professor of political science and the Dean’s Fellow for the Action Collaborative, stated, “Our centers and institutes are founded and directed by some passionate, engaged faculty, and they do incredible public-facing, accessible learning.”

Enhancing Community Engagement

The overarching objective of the A&S Action Collaborative is to expose both UC students and the wider community to the significant benefits of interdisciplinary research. The leaders of these centers are proactively considering how their academic insights can positively influence the world outside academia. This initiative represents more than just a formal alliance; it embodies a commitment to the college’s new motto, ‘Discovery In Action’, which seeks to translate liberal arts studies into meaningful societal contributions.

Looking ahead, the collaborative plans to centralize community outreach and develop a unified platform for regional organizations to connect with UC’s expertise. Williams remarked, “It creates an incredible range of opportunities,” highlighting the vast potential for collaboration across various domains, whether in urban development or civil discourse.

The A&S Action Collaborative is poised to become a vital hub where academic research meets practical applications, ultimately aiming to transform both local and broader communities through innovative, interdisciplinary projects.
