URGENT UPDATE: A tragic shark attack at Long Reef Beach in Sydney, Australia has left a 57-year-old father dead, prompting an immediate shark hunt off the coast. Authorities confirmed that Mercury Psillakis was killed while surfing approximately 100 meters offshore on September 30, 2023, marking just the second fatal shark incident in Sydney since 1963.

Emergency services received distress calls shortly after 10 a.m., rushing to the beach after reports of a man suffering critical injuries. Despite quick response efforts, Psillakis was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses described a horrific scene as they spotted the shark’s dorsal fin. One local, Mark Morgenthal, recounted, “There was a guy screaming, ‘I don’t want to get bitten…’ and I saw the dorsal fin of the shark come up, and it was huge.”

Psillakis, a seasoned surfer and well-known figure in the Northern Beaches community for selling rare exotic plants, has left behind a wife and young daughter. Details suggest he was attacked while riding a wave, disappearing beneath the water before his body was recovered shortly after. New South Wales Police Inspector Stuart Thomson confirmed, “Attempts to save his life were unsuccessful.”

In response to the attack, drone operators are currently scanning the waters for any additional shark activity, while Long Reef Beach remains closed to the public. Local authorities urge residents to stay away from beaches in the area as lifeguards enforce water entry restrictions. Police and shark biologists are now analyzing the attack site, including fragments of Psillakis’s surfboard, to identify the species of shark involved.

This incident stands out in a region where shark attacks are exceptionally rare. The last fatality occurred in 2022 when diving instructor Simon Nellist was killed by a great white shark at Little Bay Beach. The last deadly incident before that was in 1963, when actress Marcia Hathaway was attacked by a bull shark.

Authorities have emphasized that shark nets are routinely installed across 51 beaches in New South Wales each year, particularly from September 1 through the warmer months when sharks are more prevalent. However, officials remind the public that while sharks are present year-round, their activity can vary based on environmental conditions.

As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of Psillakis, a beloved member who will be dearly missed. As drone surveillance persists and safety measures are put in place, locals remain vigilant, fully aware of the risks that the ocean can pose.
