Lee County Secures $1.2 Million Grant for Beach Erosion Recovery

The main focus of this project covers 1.1 miles of shoreline within Lovers Key State Park and 0.8 miles at the northern end of Bonita Beach, also known as Little Hickory Island.
In an important collaborative effort with the City of Bonita Springs, the project also addresses hurricane damage along a stretch of beach south to the Lee-Collier county line. The recovery work, executed by Weeks Marine Inc., involved excavating and transporting beach-compatible sand from a Gulf sand source, effectively nourishing multiple beach sections. This critical work was completed in March 2023.
Both Lovers Key and Bonita Beach experienced severe erosion due to the impacts of Hurricane Ian, a Category 4 storm that struck in September 2022, followed by Hurricane Nicole, a Category 1 storm in November 2022. In response to these significant damages, the FDEP actively engaged local governments to assess beach-recovery needs. These inputs were compiled into the Hurricanes Ian and Nicole Recovery Plan, which was published in December 2022 and assisted the legislature in securing necessary funding.
