Greta Thunberg has joined a flotilla of boats carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, which set sail from Barcelona on August 31, 2023. The mission aims to challenge Israel’s naval blockade and deliver essential supplies to the beleaguered territory. Thousands of supporters gathered at the port, many waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans such as “Free Palestine” and “It’s not a war, it’s a genocide.”

Before the departure, Thunberg addressed the crowd, stating, “This is a mission to challenge the extremely violent, business-as-usual international system that is failing to uphold international law.” This flotilla, comprising dozens of boats, is expected to be joined by additional vessels from locations such as Greece, Italy, and Tunisia.

Background on the Blockade and Humanitarian Crisis

The Israeli blockade of Gaza, imposed in 2007, has faced criticism and claims that it is necessary to prevent weapons from reaching the Hamas militant group. Previous attempts to breach the blockade, including Thunberg’s earlier effort in June, resulted in the seizure of their aid ship by Israeli forces, with the activists subsequently deported.

Organizers of the current flotilla have directed their frustrations towards global leaders, accusing them of failing to pressure Israel into allowing humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza. This urgency follows reports from a global hunger monitor indicating that parts of Gaza are experiencing famine conditions.

As part of the flotilla’s efforts, approximately 250 metric tons of food for Gaza has been collected from local groups in Genoa, Italy. Some of this aid was loaded onto boats departing from Genoa on Sunday, while the remainder is slated for shipment to the Sicilian port of Catania. Additional vessels are expected to set sail for Gaza on September 4, 2023.

Escalating Violence and Humanitarian Impact

The blockade has remained a contentious issue amidst ongoing conflicts, including the current war that erupted on October 7, 2023. This conflict has reportedly resulted in over 1,200 fatalities in Israel and 251 hostages taken, according to Israeli sources. In response, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has resulted in more than 63,000 fatalities, predominantly among civilians, as reported by Gaza health officials.

The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, plunging the region into a severe humanitarian crisis and leaving much of it in ruins. As the flotilla sets out on its mission, it underscores the mounting international concern regarding the humanitarian conditions in Gaza and the ongoing effects of the blockade.
