Nationwide Halva Recall Due to Salmonella Risk in Canada

A nationwide recall has been initiated for halva products potentially contaminated with salmonella, coinciding with ongoing recalls of various pistachio-related items. The recall, issued on August 26, 2023 by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), specifically targets Shaikh Al Kar brand plain halva. This product was sold in 400-gram containers across several provinces, including Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Quebec.

Halva is a popular sweet treat originating from the Middle East and South and Central Asia. It is typically made from ground sesame seeds mixed with sugar or honey, and may include ingredients such as pistachios. The product is often served in blocks or slices as a dessert, used as a spread, or incorporated into pastries.

The CFIA has warned that salmonella poses a serious health risk, which can lead to severe illness or death in vulnerable populations. “Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” the CFIA stated. Those most at risk include young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, with potential long-term effects including severe arthritis. The incubation period for salmonella illnesses can range from 15 to 55 days after ingestion.

This recall is part of a broader response to a significant pistachio-related outbreak. On the same day, the CFIA announced a withdrawal of 15 pistachio-related products, including ice cream, cookies, and chocolate bars, which were sold between April and June 2023. This outbreak has led to 10 hospitalizations and 62 reports of illness linked to these products.

The Shaikh Al Kar recall falls under Class 2, indicating a moderate risk of non-life-threatening symptoms. According to the company’s website, Shaikh Al Kar is a prominent manufacturer of halva and tahini, established in 2014 in Amman, Jordan. The company expanded its operations with a second factory in Amman in 2019.

Research from the University of California—Davis highlights how salmonella contamination can occur in pistachios due to exposure to animals, soil, or contaminated water and equipment. Contaminated nuts are particularly susceptible to ongoing contamination in humid or hot processing environments.

To mitigate the risk of salmonella, the Government of Canada recommends thorough handwashing, adherence to food safety guidelines, and caution when dining in potentially unsanitary restaurants. It also urges individuals to report any suspected food poisoning cases to health authorities.

Consumers are advised to check their halva products and return them to the point of purchase if they are affected by the recall.
