Cincinnati Beating Coordinator Jermaine Mathews Granted Bond Again

UPDATE: Jermaine Mathews, a key suspect in the viral Cincinnati beating, has been granted bond once again after federal drug charges surfaced earlier this week. Mathews, aged 39, was arrested on August 25, 2025, and charged with conspiracy to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl.
This decision comes as the investigation into the brutal July 26 street assault intensifies, drawing widespread public outrage. Prosecutors are fighting to keep Mathews behind bars, highlighting disturbing footage of him allegedly assaulting 45-year-old victim Alex Tchervinski during the incident.
During a bond hearing on Wednesday, federal prosecutor Anthony Springer argued for Mathews’ continued detention, presenting evidence of his involvement in the violent brawl that left Tchervinski and another victim, Holly, severely injured. Tchervinski was reportedly struck 28 times during the attack, while Holly is facing uncertain recovery from significant brain trauma.
“He should remain in custody due to the severity of the charges,” Springer emphasized, citing the viral nature of the attack.
Despite these arguments, Mathews’ attorney, Kara Blackney, noted that he has no prior violent felony convictions and strong community ties, including three children. The judge ultimately ruled to release him on bond, prompting the prosecution to appeal the decision immediately. Mathews is currently held in Butler County Jail as the appeal is pursued.
Mathews previously posted a $270,000 bond on local charges including three counts of felonious assault, three counts of assault, and two counts of aggravated rioting. His return to court has sparked significant media coverage as the case continues to unfold.
The horrifying details of the July brawl, which were widely shared online, involved a group of assailants attacking Tchervinski and his companion on the corner of Fourth and Elm Streets. Following the incident, Tchervinski was charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly slapping one of the attackers, an act his lawyer argues was a response to repeated assaults.
In total, five others have been charged locally in connection with the incident, all facing similar felonious assault and rioting charges. The community remains on edge as more details emerge about the circumstances surrounding this violent confrontation.
As the legal battles unfold, the public is left questioning the implications of Mathews’ release and the ongoing impact on victims. Updates will continue as authorities work through the legal proceedings surrounding this case.
