The University of Oklahoma (OU) commenced the academic year on August 21, 2023, by welcoming its largest freshman class in history, comprising **6,251 incoming students**. This milestone not only sets a new record for the university but also marks the largest freshman cohort in the state of Oklahoma.

This year’s enrollment figures extend OU’s streak of record freshman enrollment to five consecutive years. Additionally, it is the third straight year that a record number of Oklahomans have opted to start their college journey at OU. The university has reported a **16% increase in overall enrollment** for the fall term, with freshman numbers surging by over 30% in the past three years. In total, OU’s campuses now accommodate more than **36,500 students**.

Significance of the Class of 2029

OU President **Joseph Harroz Jr.** highlighted the importance of this incoming class, stating, “The Class of 2029 symbolizes the unmatched value of an OU education that is rapidly drawing students and families from across Oklahoma and beyond.” He expressed excitement about supporting another outstanding group of students as they embark on their educational journeys.

The academic credentials of the Class of 2029 are impressive. The collective unweighted high school GPA is **3.64**, with **711 students** achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA. Among the new students, **26% are first-generation college attendees**, and **330 students** were ranked first in their high school graduating class. Furthermore, **117 students** have been recognized as Oklahoma State Regents’ Scholars, and **770 qualify for Oklahoma’s Promise**.

Celebrating New Beginnings

The university celebrated the arrival of the Class of 2029 with an event at the **Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium**. Notable speakers included OU quarterback **John Mateer** and freshman basketball recruit **Aaliyah Chavez**, who is recognized as the top recruit in the nation.
