UPDATE: New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has confirmed that despite a recent offensive slump, shortstop Anthony Volpe will continue to be viewed as the team’s primary shortstop. This announcement comes as Volpe remains out of the starting lineup for the second consecutive game against the Washington Nationals.

Boone stated, “Regularly, I plan on having him back in there [Tuesday],” emphasizing that Volpe’s absence is a strategic reset rather than a demotion. This marks only the sixth time this season Volpe has not started, with utility player Jose Caballero stepping in during his absence.

Volpe, 24, has faced a turbulent third season, particularly struggling in August, batting just 1-for-28 with a double and an alarming 11 strikeouts in his last 29 plate appearances. His performance has seen him slip to a .208 batting average overall this season, with just 18 home runs and a .675 OPS in 509 plate appearances. These struggles have prompted mixed reactions from fans, as he has faced regular boos at home games.

Boone described the recent two-day break as a necessary “reset” for Volpe, highlighting the importance of mental resilience in the high-pressure environment of New York. “Hopefully a little blow in the grind of the season is something that serves him well down the stretch,” Boone said.

Volpe’s defensive performance has also raised concerns. After being a Gold Glove finalist last season, he currently ranks 21st among 24 qualified shortstops with a troubling -7 Outs Above Average. Boone acknowledged the challenges Volpe is facing but remains confident in his abilities. “I think he’s mentally very tough and totally wired to handle all of the things that go with being a big leaguer in this city,” he said.

As the Yankees prepare for the remainder of the season, all eyes will be on Volpe’s return and whether he can regain his form. Fans are eager to see if this brief hiatus will help him find the consistency needed to turn his season around. With crucial games ahead, the Yankees and their supporters are hoping for a swift resurgence from their young star.

Stay tuned for further updates as the Yankees take on the Nationals, with Volpe’s status and performance under keen scrutiny.
