As extreme heat grips the Southland, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is taking significant precautions to ensure the safety and comfort of both students and staff. Starting Wednesday, the region is expected to experience soaring temperatures, with some areas nearing record highs throughout the week.

In response to this heat wave, LAUSD officials have outlined a series of protective measures aimed at mitigating the effects of the heat on school activities. These measures include modifications to schedules for recess and lunch, which will reduce outdoor exposure during peak heat hours. Additionally, high-school athletic events and outdoor clubs will be rescheduled or modified to prioritize safety.

To further protect students and staff, the district is ensuring that air conditioning units in school buildings are functioning properly. In the event that any classroom units fail, portable air conditioning units will be made available. Schools will also take steps to maintain cooler temperatures by closing doors and windows and relocating students to cooler areas when necessary.

Frequent water breaks will be provided to keep everyone hydrated, while physical activities will be closely monitored and adjusted accordingly. The district is also advising students to limit their exposure to hot surfaces, such as asphalt, concrete, and artificial turf, to the cooler morning hours.

Students have been encouraged to dress appropriately in breathable, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing. They are also advised to apply sunscreen, wear hats when outdoors, and stay vigilant for signs of heat-related illnesses. Symptoms such as fatigue, dehydration, or muscle cramps should be reported immediately to a teacher or coach.

LAUSD’s proactive response reflects its commitment to the well-being of its students and staff during this challenging weather period. By implementing these measures, the district aims to create a safer environment for learning and activities as the heat wave continues to impact the region.
