Actor Rudy Youngblood, best known for his role in Apocalypto, has been cast as the male lead in the upcoming film La Matadora. This period drama, which will begin shooting in Mexico, is centered around a female bullfighter and her romantic connection with a tortured artist. Youngblood will portray Nico Cortez, described as “a tortured painter with a poetic heart,” who becomes deeply entwined in the life of the titular character.

The film is based on the life of renowned Mexican bullfighter Mary Rubio and follows the journey of Isabel Fernández, a fearless bullfighter challenging societal norms in the 1940s. According to the film’s synopsis, “La Matadora” showcases Isabel as she not only battles bulls but also confronts the rigid traditions of a male-dominated arena.

Youngblood’s character, Nico, finds himself captivated by Isabel’s defiant spirit, embarking on a passionate journey of self-discovery. The narrative promises to explore themes of love and danger, particularly within the perilous confines of the bullfighting arena, where a single misstep can lead to fatal consequences.

Filming is scheduled to commence in the fall of 2023. The production team, led by Lyle Howry of Skinfly Entertainment, is currently negotiating with Mexican government officials regarding potential tax incentives for the film. Howry is expected to attend the USMEXA 100 Summit, a key event aimed at enhancing economic ties between the United States and Mexico. A private meeting with Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican President, is also on the agenda at the historic National Palace.

The screenplay for La Matadora was crafted by T.C. De Witt, known for his work on Blade: Heart of Darkness, and the film is inspired by the experiences of Richard Maldonado, Mary Rubio’s nephew. Notably, Howry has emphasized that the production will ensure no animals are harmed during the filmmaking process.

Youngblood gained prominence for his role as “Jaguar Paw” in Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, which marked his film debut. His subsequent credits include roles in Wind Walkers alongside Glen Powell, Beatdown with Danny Trejo, and other films such as Crossing Point and Attrition featuring Steven Seagal.

As anticipation builds for La Matadora, the film is set to not only entertain but also spotlight the challenges faced by women in traditionally male-dominated fields.
