UPDATE: Walgreens is ramping up staffing and operational strategies to meet the anticipated surge in flu vaccine demand for the 2025-2026 respiratory virus season. In an urgent announcement, Samantha Picking, PharmD, senior director of immunizations at Walgreens, revealed that preparations are underway to facilitate flu shots across more than 9,000 Walgreens locations nationwide.

This year, Walgreens aims to enhance the patient vaccination experience by implementing critical changes based on lessons learned from previous seasons. The pharmacy chain has significantly expanded its staffing models, adding technician hours and contract immunizers, and utilizing micro-fulfillment centers that allow pharmacists to focus more on patient care.

Picking stated, “We feel confident that our stores are properly staffed to meet demand. As the season progresses, we will continue to monitor, assess, and make real-time adjustments to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our patients.” This proactive approach comes in light of Walgreens administering nearly 38 million flu vaccines during the 2024-2025 season, almost double the number delivered in medical offices.

The integration of new digital tools, including a global scheduler and digital check-in options, will streamline the vaccination process, reduce wait times, and provide patients with flexible options. Stores utilizing these micro-fulfillment centers are reportedly administering about 40% more vaccines than those that are not.

Looking ahead, Walgreens is preparing for a high interest in vaccine co-administration, especially among seniors. “We anticipate similar interest this season,” Picking added, highlighting the importance of being ready for increased patient traffic. The pharmacy chain is committed to updating its website and mobile app with real-time appointment availability, making it easier for patients to secure their vaccinations.

As the flu season approaches, the operational improvements at Walgreens are crucial for easing the burden on pharmacy staff while enhancing the overall patient experience. The pharmacy is also focusing on communication quiet periods to minimize distractions for team members, allowing them to concentrate on patient interactions.
