UPDATE: Chicago Cubs right fielder Kyle Tucker is set to take multiple days off from the lineup following a dismal performance in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers on August 28, 2023. Manager Craig Counsell announced the decision after the Cubs suffered a crushing 7-0 defeat.

Tucker, 28, has been mired in a severe slump this month, batting just .160 with no extra-base hits. Fans voiced their frustration during the game as Tucker recorded three consecutive outs, leading to his decision to step back and reset. “When you make outs, it doesn’t look good,” Counsell stated. “He’s trying. It’s just not clicking. We’re going to have to take a step back here, just give him some days off to reset him, hopefully.”

The Cubs’ struggling outfielder has not hit a home run since July 19 and has only four extra-base hits since the start of July. His recent performance has led to a skyrocketing ground ball rate of 53.7%, which ranks as the 17th highest among qualified hitters, according to ESPN Research. This stark contrast from his earlier season performance has raised concerns within the organization.

“It’s not for lack of effort on the coaching side or Kyle’s side,” said Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer before the game. “He hasn’t slugged in quite a while. The ball is not in the air. A lot of it is mechanical.” Hoyer highlighted that Tucker’s swing mechanics have deteriorated since the beginning of the season, impacting his power at the plate.

Tucker’s earlier struggles included jamming his right ring finger in June, which he claims is not affecting his swing now. However, the lingering impact of that injury may have contributed to his current performance issues. As the eight-year veteran approaches free agency after this season, both fans and management are eager for a turnaround.

Counsell remains optimistic about Tucker’s potential, stating, “He’s too good a player for it not to click. He’s going to get hot again. Hopefully, it’s a torrid hot streak like it was in April.” While Tucker takes this necessary time to regroup mentally, he will continue to work with coaches behind the scenes to address his mechanics.

In a related note, Cubs starter Cade Horton exited Game 1 in the third inning due to a blister issue but reassured fans that he expects to make his next start. “It’s nothing crazy,” Horton confirmed.

As the Cubs look to rebound from this setback, all eyes will be on Tucker’s return and whether he can regain his earlier form. Fans await further updates as the team navigates these challenges in the lead-up to crucial games ahead.
