Hyundai Motor Group is at the forefront of this innovation. The company has recently applied for a patent on a solid-state battery using copper anodes. Copper is a superior conductor of electricity but is often corroded by sulfides found in many solid-state batteries. Hyundai’s researchers have developed a protective coating for the copper, enhancing its stability and durability. As the company notes, this new battery design could lead to significant improvements in performance and a reduction in manufacturing costs.

Hyundai is also working with Seoul National University on further advancements in this technology. Plans are underway to establish a pilot production line for solid-state batteries at the company’s Uiwang Research Institute. This initiative highlights a growing commitment to commercializing innovative battery technologies.

Advancements in Electric Motor Technology

In addition to battery developments, electric motor technology is also evolving. Orbis Electric has introduced HaloDrive, an axial flux motor designed for heavy-duty vehicles. This innovative motor features a modular, four-part architecture that improves efficiency and performance. According to Business Wire, HaloDrive offers a torque density of 100 Nm/kg, comparable to that of a V8 engine, while being 35% cheaper than current radial flux motors.

The HaloDrive motor is notable for its high energy efficiency, reaching 97%. It can be integrated into traditional drivetrains or used as a generator, providing a sustainable alternative to diesel-powered refrigeration units in transport applications. Orbis Electric claims that switching to HaloDrive technology could result in a 100% reduction in diesel refrigeration fuel consumption and emissions, alongside significant cost savings.

These technological strides reflect a broader trend toward cleaner energy solutions, as traditional fossil fuel companies face increasing pressure to adapt or risk obsolescence. The fossil fuel sector has historically resisted regulation, arguing for market-driven solutions. Yet, as alternatives become more cost-effective, the industry’s position is shifting.
