Tragic Drownings Strike Carnival’s Celebration Key Resort

Two American tourists tragically drowned at Carnival’s newly opened private resort, Celebration Key, located on Grand Bahama Island. The incidents occurred just hours apart on August 15, 2023, following the resort’s grand opening on July 19, 2023, which marked a significant investment of $600 million by the cruise line.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed that a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman, both American nationals, were involved in the drownings. According to Carnival Cruise Line, the water emergencies occurred at different locations within the resort, one in a lagoon and the other at a beach.
Carnival’s spokesperson stated that lifeguards and medical teams promptly responded to both incidents. The first drowning involved the unidentified man, who was snorkeling at the beach when he became unresponsive shortly before noon. Lifeguards attempted to revive him with CPR, but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The second incident took place around 14:30 when the 74-year-old woman was discovered unresponsive in a swimming pool. Autopsies are currently being conducted to ascertain the precise causes of death.
The two passengers were guests on separate Carnival cruise ships. The 79-year-old man was part of a six-day Eastern Bahama trip aboard the Mardi Gras from Port Canaveral, Florida, while the 74-year-old woman was traveling on the Carnival Elation for a four-day voyage from Jacksonville, Florida.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families, and our Care Team is providing assistance,” Carnival stated in response to the incidents. The cruise line emphasized its commitment to safety and support for affected families during this difficult time.
Celebration Key, which has been marketed as the “Key to Paradise,” features attractions such as the largest freshwater lagoon in the Caribbean and an expansive infinity pool at the Pearl Cove Beach Club. With five marquee attractions, the resort aims to enhance the cruising experience for its guests, offering a variety of activities including paddleboarding and dining options.
Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, described the opening of Celebration Key as an “extraordinary milestone,” highlighting the resort’s role in showcasing the beauty of the Bahamas alongside new experiences for visitors. “We’ve built the ultimate beach day for our guests, whether they crave fun in the sun or relaxation under a palm tree,” she remarked during the opening.
As investigations into the drownings continue, Carnival Cruise Line faces scrutiny regarding safety measures at its new resort, which was designed to provide an exclusive getaway for cruise passengers. The tragic events serve as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and preparedness in popular tourist destinations.
