Seahawks Show Transformation in Preseason Win Over Chiefs

The Seattle Seahawks demonstrated a significant transformation in their performance with a convincing preseason win against the Kansas City Chiefs. This match, held on August 25, 2024, highlighted the drastic improvements made by the team, particularly under the guidance of their new coaching staff. The Seahawks, once ranked 31st in the league for offensive line performance by Pro Football Focus (PFF) at the end of the previous season, now appear to be evolving into a formidable unit.
Offensive Line Leads the Charge
For the second consecutive week, the Seahawks’ offensive line dominated the PFF grading chart. Four of the top six grades for Seattle’s offense went to linemen, showcasing their critical role in the team’s success. Right guard Anthony Bradford topped the list with an impressive overall grade of 92.9, bolstered by a 90.2 rating in run blocking. Center Jalen Sundell, rebounding from a less favorable performance against the Raiders, earned the second-highest grade at 92.4.
The contributions from right tackle Abe Lucas (grade of 82.4) and left guard Grey Zabel (grade of 78.7) further solidified the offensive line’s dominance. Rookie fullback Robbie Ouzts has also emerged as a vital component of the Seahawks’ revamped rushing attack, which accumulated 268 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. The only lineman to struggle was Sataoa Laumea, whose overall grade of 46.3 was hindered by a disappointing mark of 24.8 in pass blocking.
Drew Lock’s Strong Performance
Backup quarterback Drew Lock bounced back from a lackluster outing against the Raiders, where he faced challenges including an interception. Against the Chiefs, Lock completed 10 of 12 passes for 129 yards, achieving a passer rating of 151.0 and a commendable overall grade of 75.2, ranking seventh on the offense. In a single drive, quarterback Sam Darnold earned a grade of 64.8, contributing to the team’s overall efficiency without heavy demands placed on him.
On the defensive side, the Seahawks’ safeties particularly stood out, showcasing their ability to control the game. The highest defensive grade went to Jerrick Reed II, who scored 90.9 overall, with a notable 86.3 in coverage and 80.7 in tackling. Following closely was Coby Bryant, who posted a grade of 80.8, excelling in both tackling and coverage as well. Julian Love also made an impact, finishing with a grade of 72.2.
The defensive performance was not without its challenges, as nose tackle Bubba Thomas struggled, earning a low grade of 28.6 overall. His performance in run defense was particularly concerning, with a mark of 29.6. Fellow nose tackle Quinton Bohanna also faced difficulties, but the impact of defensive lineman Brandon Pili was felt, as he recorded a safety during the game.
The Seahawks’ impressive preseason performance signals a promising shift as they prepare for the upcoming season. This newfound strength, particularly in the offensive line and safety positions, could be pivotal for their success moving forward.
