Duffer Brothers Leave Netflix for Paramount in Major Move

URGENT UPDATE: Breaking news confirms that the creators of the hit series Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, are officially leaving Netflix to join Paramount Pictures. This major industry shift comes as the brothers seek to focus on theatrical releases, a decision that highlights the changing landscape of streaming versus cinema.
Reports emerged just days ago, speculating that the Duffer brothers were considering a move to Paramount, known for its blockbuster franchises like Mission: Impossible. Now, industry insider Matt Belloni has confirmed their transition, marking a significant talent shakeup for Netflix following its recent partnership with Skydance Media.
The Duffers’ departure is fueled by their desire for films that hit the big screen, as opposed to Netflix’s preference for limited theatrical releases, typically reserved for potential Oscar contenders. To date, the brothers have only directed one film, the psychological thriller Hidden, released in 2015.
Despite their shift to Paramount, the Duffers will maintain a presence at Netflix for the foreseeable future. Their production company, Upside Down Productions, is working on an animated prequel titled Tales of 85, set to premiere in 2026. Additionally, they are executive producing two non-Stranger Things series: The Boroughs and Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, both also slated for release in 2026.
As for the final season of Stranger Things, it is set to premiere in three parts on November 26, 2023, December 25, 2023, and December 31, 2023. This highly anticipated conclusion marks a pivotal moment for fans and the streaming platform itself.
The move to Paramount signals a broader trend in the entertainment industry, where creators are increasingly seeking the cinematic experience. As audiences demand fresh content, this shift raises questions about the future of streaming platforms and their role in film distribution.
