Colleges Gear Up for Student Move-In Days in Fargo-Moorhead

As summer draws to a close, the Fargo-Moorhead metro area is preparing to welcome back thousands of college students in the coming weeks. With move-in days approaching, local institutions are implementing strategies to ensure a smooth transition for new and returning students.
At Concordia College, the campus is buzzing with activity as the student-led orientation team works diligently to assist first-time students. Senior Martam Gregoire recalls his own experience from freshman year, noting how the high energy and warmth of his Orientation Leaders helped him feel at ease. “They were really welcoming. I immediately felt at home,” he said. Now, as a senior, he is committed to providing that same support to newcomers.
Sunet Rubalcava, from Concordia’s Center for Student Success, highlighted the importance of connecting students with campus resources. “The first year of college is always the hardest one,” she explained. To facilitate a smooth move-in day, Concordia will rely on a dedicated team of volunteers, including students and staff.
Students are reminded that dorms at Concordia come equipped with microwaves and refrigerators. Therefore, they should consider leaving unnecessary appliances at home to lessen the load during their move.
Moving can be a challenging experience for both students and parents. Rian Nostrum, director of Residence Life at North Dakota State University, shared practical tips to ease the transition. He recommends labeling boxes to maintain organization and using campus-provided maps for navigation, rather than relying on Google Maps. Additionally, he advises students living locally to leave nonessential items behind.
Nostrum acknowledged the emotional weight of move-in day, stating, “We know that this is an emotional time.” He expressed his enthusiasm for interacting with students, emphasizing that such connections are a core part of his role. “I can do my work later, but to be able to interact with you is why I do what I do,” he added.
Move-in days for local colleges are scheduled as follows: August 21 for Minnesota State University Moorhead, August 23 for NDSU, and August 24 for Concordia College. As these institutions gear up for the influx of students, they aim to create a welcoming atmosphere that fosters a sense of belonging and community.
