Israeli Forces Intensify Assault on Gaza City, 12 Reported Dead
Israeli forces have escalated their military operations in Gaza City, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 individuals and significant damage to infrastructure. This development, reported on August 13, 2023, comes as part of a broader initiative to take control of the city, according to Palestinian authorities. The airstrikes have predominantly affected residential areas, particularly Zeitoun and Sabra, which have endured attacks for three consecutive days, leading to “massive damage to civilian homes,” as stated by the Hamas-run Gaza civil defense agency.
The fatalities reported early Wednesday morning are part of a larger toll, with at least 39 people confirmed dead across the Gaza Strip. Medical sources indicated that 19 of those killed were seeking humanitarian aid at the time of the strikes, highlighting the dire situation many civilians face.
International Response and Humanitarian Concerns
As the violence escalates, foreign ministers from several nations, including Britain, Japan, Canada, Australia, and Switzerland, have condemned the use of lethal force at humanitarian aid distribution sites. They joined the European Union in urging immediate action to address the emerging famine conditions in Gaza. In a joint statement, they emphasized that “urgent action is needed now to halt and reverse starvation,” underscoring the gravity of the humanitarian crisis.
The ministers have raised concerns about new restrictive registration measures imposed by Israel, which may force international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to cease operations in Gaza. They called on the Israeli government to authorize all international NGO aid shipments and to facilitate the safe passage of humanitarian workers. The statement further demanded that all crossings and routes into Gaza be opened to allow for a substantial influx of aid, including food, shelter, fuel, clean water, and medical supplies.
The need for a cease-fire was also highlighted, with the ministers stating, “We need a cease-fire that can end the war, for hostages to be released and aid to enter Gaza by land unhindered.”
Military Operations and Strategic Objectives
In response to the ongoing conflict, the chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, confirmed a new phase in military operations. Following approval from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s war cabinet, the IDF aims to seize control of remaining Hamas strongholds, including Gaza City. Zamir stated, “We are at the start of a new stage in the fighting in Gaza. We will do everything to protect the hostages and bring them home.”
This strategy marks a shift from previous tactics, as Zamir had initially supported a more gradual approach, citing concerns about troop fatigue and doubts regarding the effectiveness of military force in rescuing hostages. However, the incremental strategy was dismissed in favor of more aggressive measures deemed necessary to defeat Hamas.
